I love this so much! I don’t like to be told what to read-even by myself- either. It’s why I don’t set lots of reading goals and why I don’t participate in book clubs. I’ve been working toward getting away from bookish FOMO and trusting my gut a lot more when it comes to what I choose to read. It’s definitely been helping even if I’m still not off to such a great start in 2026! Hopefully that ship will turn around soon.
I don’t like being told what to read — even when I’m the one doing the telling.
When you said this on the podcast I laughed so much. This is me.
I had to think back to how I decided what to read before I began listening to podcasts and aligning my reading interests with other people. I've told you before I had a similar experience as you last year too. I think you hit the nail on the head with "curiosity". That's what was missing from my procurement process. Having a line up, ready to delve into gave me that seamless flow from this book to the next, but it stifled my curiosity.
I think I'm doing better. I have definitely moved on from FOMO.
That’s exactly where my mind went — when was I happiest as reader in recent memory — it was when I had almost no clue what I was going to read next. But one thing I had to remember is that I can make the changes I need to get back to that kind of happiness, but I am never going to be exactly the same person I once was. So I had to make changes for who I am NOW. So, Rita! Make the change you need!! You’ve got this.

Yes, LeAnne! Listen to your gut — and take chances — and be curious. 🙌👏
Just standing ovation happening over here!!
I’ll do my own curtsy for this!
